Monitor Audio Hyphn Overview

When Monitor Audio set out to design the Hyphn loudspeaker, they had the advantage of being a private company with no constraints put on the engineers. This free reign led to a speaker that is one of most unique loudspeakers you will ever see or hear. The team took their decades of science-backed engineering knowledge on how our ears hear sound to develop a speaker that only a company that allowed this creative freedom could produce.

When you see the Hyphn at Audio Advice Live, you will be struck by its physical appearance. We guarantee that you have never seen anything like it in the past. Monitor Audio starts with a solid surface material that is a composite of acrylic, minerals, and natural pigments. This acrylic stone material is then machine cut and hand polished to achieve the unique shape that supports the Hyphn’s components. While this creates a cabinet that weighs 235 pounds, the material is so rigid and inert, there are no unwanted vibrations.

The sonic goal of Hyphn was to create a speaker as close to a point source design that also removed as many room interactions as possible. They use a single MPD III transducer for the high frequencies which extends out way beyond our hearing to 60Khz. It is surrounded by 6 new RDT III midrange units. These small units act as one larger unit but by surrounding the tweeter achieve a point source effect. The new flat drivers are very piston-like giving the Hyphn more precision, lower distortion, and an amazing tonal balance.

RDT stands for Rigid Diaphragm Technology used to create a composite ‘sandwich’ structure made from ultra-thin low-mass skins, bonded to a honeycomb Nomex® core material. Extremely light and strong, it can respond with great speed without bending. This combination reduces distortion by over 8 dB above 300 Hz, which makes RDT III the lowest distortion cone technology in Monitor Audio’s history.

The team then designed new bass drivers with four of them used directly behind the M-Array that couples the two cabinets together. Two pairs of woofers face each other in a force canceling design and are bridged together. Having these directly behind the M-Array contributes even more to a point source effect.

And wait until you hear the deep bass this system is capable of. You’ll feel in room bass response reach down to as low as 15 Hz in the demos Monitor Audio will be doing for us at Audio Advice Live.

For the important crossover components Monitor Audio worked with Clarity Capacitors to develop new capacitors for the Hyphn crossover.

When you sit down you will be struck by the awesome visuals of the acrylic stone cabinet design that looks like nothing you have ever seen. But when the music starts, you’ll understand why they have been called a “staggeringly potent pair of loudspeakers”.

Put simply, the Hyphn is the most powerful loudspeaker Monitor Audio has ever produced and we’re thrilled to demonstrate it here at Audio Advice Live.

After you’ve experienced the remarkable Hyphn demo, move over to the other side of the Monitor Audio room to hear their Cinergy Cinema-Grade Home Theater speakers. These share a similar tweeter to the one found in the Hyphn with a unique midrange pod using RDT II technology.

In this demo you will be completely immersed by the pure and natural Monitor Audio sound with dynamic capabilities that will make you smile.

And be sure to check out Experience Room 1618 where Monitor Audio will be displaying their latest Platinum 3G speakers. These share a lot of the Hyphn technology at a much more affordable price point. They have the same MPD III high-frequency transducer as the Hyphn and use a 4” single version of the RDT III midrange driver with RDT III bass drivers. While they will not give you the same level of musical enjoyment as the amazing Hyphn, you’ll find a lot of similar characteristics that make these one heck of a great speaker.
